I write this as I wait in the dentist office for a root canal. Ouch!
I visited my regular dentist this morning with symptoms of sensitivity for the upper tooth, third from the back on the right side. Dr. Ohlsson said that the nerve had died and that I needed a root canal. I asked, "What if I let it go since the pain isn't too bad and comes and goes." He explained that it would be okay for a while but eventually the pain would get worse. And so I took his expert advice and proceeded with the root canal.
There are some things in life that we prefer to avoid. For many people a trip to the dentist is not among their favorite things to do. But, generally speaking, after having done so, the outcome is usually a happier smile.
When we think of sin in our lives - whether it is a particular sin that is troubling us or a general sense of disconnect with God - it can be humbling and painful to confess that sin to God, and even more so to confess that sin to a person who we may have hurt in some way. But, having done so, this results in the refreshing forgiveness of sins that God has gifted us in Jesus Christ. What a joy it is to hear those words from God, "Your sins is forgiven!" What a joy it is to hear someone say, "Apology accepted!" The relief of being forgiven far exceeds the pain in holding onto the sin in our life!
Let us pray: Lord God, I ask that you would this day forgive me for the sin of _________ which is particularly bothering me today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
