The idea behind a thank offering is to celebrate some special moment or event in one’s life.
As Thanksgiving approaches I have been reflecting on some of the things for which I can give thanks. Here are my top 10:
1. I am thankful for my spouse: LuJean.
2. I am thankful for my children: Jason, Erin, Sean, Chris and Sara.
3. I am thankful for my five grandchildren: Sophia, Andrew, Madeline, Lydia, and Neve.
4. I am thankful for the kindness and generosity of people at Living Word.
5. I am thankful for the quality education my grandchildren receive at Living Word School.
6. I am thankful for the courage that God has given me to share Jesus on occasion with others.
7. I am thankful for a maintenance-free home (condominium).
8. I am thankful for my overall health, despite a few age-related aches and pains.
9. I am thankful for my iPhone and the access it gives me to people.
10. Last on the list, but certainly not least in importance, the one thing that encompasses all aspects of my life is my relationship with Jesus that gives me hope for eternal life in the resurrection.
As I look over my list I begin to realize that there are many things in my life for which I am thankful – well beyond the short list above! What truly amazes me is that so few of the things on my list have a monetary value; but they each have a tremendous personal value.
Especially am I thankful for something that I took somewhat for granted when I was younger: the relationship I have with God. The older I get (now age 58), the more I find myself trusting God for the outcomes in my life that I realize that I cannot control.
During the month of November, I would encourage each family at Living Word to reflect upon the things we have to be thankful for, and to consider sharing that gratitude with a special November Thank Offering.
The November Thank Offering would go toward maintaining the salaries and benefits of workers at Living Word at their current level.
Should you wish to give a special gift as part of the collective Thank Offering at Living Word, please designate your gift on your regular giving envelope or place it in a separate envelope in the offering boxes during worship.
Please join me in prayer: Gracious God, there are so many things in my life for which I am thankful. Help me to respond appropriately to the blessings You have given me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
